Merlanti, who earned a bachelor's degree in theatre design from the University of Michigan before deciding to pursue her passion of performance at WMU, says the caliber of performers in the University's theatre program solidified her path at Western. "Jay (Berkow) does a great job of putting together a team of alumni and professionals" to work with students, she says. "Most recently we got to work with Cady Huffman during 'Next Stop Broadway,' who is a Tony Award winner."

Making it work

So today, after moving to (boring, reliable) QuickTime Player, I record lectures in the most basic way—recording my screen as I move through slide presentations and talk through my laptop microphone with no video of me to be seen. I get the job done. I am not optimistic in the same way that I was 10 days ago, but I have moved to a more practical attitude. As Tim Gunn of Project Runway used to say, “Make it work!”

Upon arrival in Kalamazoo in December 1994 to study mechanical engineering at WMU’s College of Engineering and Applied Sciences, Sankey found a job setting up, serving at, and tearing down University events. Through this job, Sankey got to know then-President Diether H. Haenicke and other University leaders. After receiving his Bachelor of Science in mechanical engineering degree in the spring of 1996, Sankey was still working for catering services while looking for a full-time engineering position.

Tuchek estimates he dedicated about 72 hours to the project—a challenge motivated by his own personal experience. "My mother was an emergency room physician assistant when I was growing up, so I know firsthand how demanding those jobs are without [the added stress of] a national pandemic." Tuchek's mother is currently the head physician assistant at an urgent care facility in St. Johns, Michigan, which he says is overwhelmed with patients right now.

"We talked about finances, time management; it was a lot of stuff in a few weeks." After graduating Thomas was connected with a job at Sigma Machine. She works in the assembly area and builds parts for cars—a job she's grown with and successfully held for more than three years. "I know that the kids depend on me, so if they see me trying to succeed and going down the right track, then they will want to follow," she says.
