Cohorts and Learning Communities

STEP cohorts and living/learning communities serve as a starting point of support for first year students in the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences.

STEP Cohorts

When you are placed in a College of Engineering and Applied Sciences cohort during summer orientation, you are registered for the same two to five courses with other students based on your major and interests. As you begin your first year at Western, you will start to notice familiar faces in each of your classes to encourage connections and peer study groups.

If you are involved in other activities such as marching band or WMU athletics, you may be ineligible for a STEP cohort due to other class requirements. Students who have AP or IB or dual enrollment credits may also have difficulty with placement if their incoming math level is above Calc I. However, if you are unable or elect not to be a STEP cohort, you will still have access to all tutoring, success programs, and resources available through STEP.

If you have any questions regarding STEP cohorts, please contact Anetra Grice.

Living/Learning Communities

Living/Learning Communities are an opportunity for Western Michigan University students to live in a hall or on a floor with peers who share similar interests, schedules, or majors. As a College of Engineering and Applied Sciences student, these Living/Learning Communities offer you additional support including free academic tutoring and special engineering related programming. Find your community through the Engineering House living/learning community.

If you are an incoming Western Michigan University student interested in joining the Engineering House, select your room on your preferred learning community floor. Living/Learning Communities are noted in the navigation map and floor map when you choose your bed. If you are a current WMU student interested in living in a learning community, visit the Residence Life office to sign up.
