Western Michigan University is a learner-centered, research university, building intellectual inquiry and discovery into undergraduate, graduate, and professional programs in a way that fosters knowledge and innovation and transforms wisdom into action. As a public university, WMU provides leadership in teaching, research, learning, and service, and is committed to enhancing the future of our global citizenry.

This is in part WMU's mission and vision. Because of these values, all individuals are expected to conduct themselves in a professional and civil manner in the University setting as well as in the community. Responsibility for fulfilling the obligations of the code of honor is shared by the students, faculty and every other member of the University community. These values include:

  • Academic honesty
  • Ethical conduct
  • Fairness
  • Integrity
  • Personal responsibility
  • Respect for others
  • Trustworthiness

Student Rights and Responsibilities is here to support you in the on-campus and distance learning environments, and we are providing all services via phone, email, in-person in Faunce Student Services room 2305 (come in the main door and go to the left) and Webex meetings. We are open Monday through Friday 8:00am-5:00pm by calling 269-387-2160.

Our mission

Student Rights and Responsibilities uses an equitable and supportive approach to educate and partner with WMU students, faculty, staff and community members in order to develop a civil, ethical and safe campus environment.

The office

Student Rights and Responsibilities assists the University community in creating and maintaining the campus environment described in our mission. The Student Code describes the boundaries of acceptable student behavior, approved by the Board of Trustees, and is interpreted and enforced by Student Rights and Responsibilities.  Students are encouraged to develop integrity through self-discipline and a sense of responsibility to the community.

Our services include:

  • Coordinating the student conduct processes described in the Student Code.
  • Acting as a resource for students, faculty and staff on matters related to student conduct.
  • Coordinating and advising conduct panels and the University Appeals Board.
