WMU Study Abroad Fee Structure

(Effective November 1, 2020)

 

Definitions  

Enrollment Fee:  The part of the billable program fee that covers WMU SA operations and is billed to a student’s account after committing to a program.

Commitment Deposit: The non-refundable portion (down payment) of the total billable program cost. Not a separate or additional fee.

HIGE Assistance: Generally refers to "operations" assistance including registration in the Broncos Abroad application system, application document preparation and processing, risk management, insurance enrollment, student advising, scholarship advising, international transcript evaluation, facilitation of fund transfers, pre-departure orientation, budget planning, and/or academic credit facilitation.

“Travel” study abroad refers to a study abroad course/program delivered by any method of academic instruction such as in-person, hybrid, or distance learning that involves travel to an international location.

“Virtual”study abroad refers to a study abroad course/program delivered by any method of academic instruction such as in-person, hybrid, or distance learning that does not involve travel to an international location.

Virtual Study Abroad Programs, Internships, and Special Virtual Programs

 *WMU students may not earn more than 8 credits per semester in a virtual program at a non-exchange partner.

 

Commitment Deposit 

Definition: The non-refundable portion (down payment) of the total billable program cost. Not a separate or additional fee.

  • Note: “Commitment fee(s)” in online and print materials are the same as “commitment deposit(s)”.
  • Note: Students who withdraw from a study abroad program after “committing” to the program in Broncos Abroad must pay the respective commitment deposit and any non-recoverable expenses associated with their program.

Miscellaneous Fees  

  • Passport photos for enrolled WMU students: $0
  • Passport photos for non-enrolled WMU students: $10
  • Photos for WMU “OPT” students: $0
  • GeoBlue International Health Insurance: $11 per student per week (mandatory 2 days added prior to and after official program dates)
