B.M. Instrumental Music Education and Trombone Performance

Why did you choose to attend WMU?
I decided to attend WMU because of the trombone studio and the many opportunities Western provided. Dr. Wolfinbarger’s exceptional teaching, passion, kindness, and commitment to his students is what propelled me to success in my career as a trombone player and educator. My time studying with him allowed me to achieve my greatest accomplishment of being able to play in a professional symphony orchestra, teach at the collegiate level, and teach band in the public schools—best of all three worlds!
What are your fondest memories of your time in the trombone studio (or music program) at WMU?
My fondest memories at Western include performing Wagner in the University Symphony Orchestra with my buddy Leland Matsumura (now a member of the US Navy Fleet Band), playing with my fellow graduate students and brass faculty for the Western Brass Quintet Christmas Concerts, the amazing trombone choir concerts, and getting to watch in person the Green Bay Packers defeat the Detroit Lions at Ford Field when the Bronco Marching Band traveled to the game for a halftime performance!
General Information:
Originally from Sun Prairie, WI, Jared Dalgleish holds a BM in Instrumental Music Education and Trombone Performance from the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point as well as a MM in Trombone Performance from Western Michigan University. He attributes much of his success on trombone to his two professors, Dr. Patrick Lawrence and Dr. Steve Wolfinbarger, respectively.
While at Western, Jared was selected to perform for the final summer tour of the American Wind Symphony Orchestra in 2017, under the direction of Maestro Robert Austin Boudreau. He is currently the principal trombonist for the Bakersfield Symphony Orchestra, and he is the Adjunct Professor of Low Brass at California State University, Bakersfield, where he teaches the low brass studio as well as a brass pedagogy class. Finally, he is the band director at Norris Middle School in Bakersfield where he works with grades 5-8 band. Jared also enjoys teaching private lessons on the side, as well as playing trombone in the Bakersfield Jazz Orchestra.
When not teaching or playing trombone, Jared will be cheering on the Green Bay Packers, watching Star Wars, or playing with his two Siberian huskies, Nala and Packer. Jared currently resides in Bakersfield with his fiancé, Stephanie Wilcox, Director of Bands at South High School and Western Michigan University alum.
