All clinical programs are facilitated by master's level occupational therapy students and supervised by occupational therapists. Below are brief descriptions of the programs.
Scholarships are now available!
Skills for Living
The Skills for Living clinic at the Occupational Therapy Clinic at WMU promotes mental health well-being through a group approach to treatment and serves clients ages four through young adult. Diagnoses include: ADHD, mood disorders, PTSD, anxiety, FASD and ODD. The focus of the clinic is to:
- Help children with self-regulation challenges maintain a calm-alert state for greater success in daily life.
- Teach social skills that can be generalized to the playground, home and classroom environments.
- Facilitate skill practice in a safe, friendly and supportive clinic “social club” type environment.
Pediatric Clinic
The Pediatric Clinic at Western Michigan University serves children who have diagnoses including:
Sensory processing disorder, ADHD, autism, cerebral palsy, Down syndrome, developmental delay, fine and gross motor dysfunction, fetal alcohol syndrome disorders and cognitive deficits. The pediatric clinic treats children six months to 18 years of age. The focus of the pediatric clinic is to allow children to develop greater success in occupations that are meaningful to them. This can include increasing independence in self-care tasks like eating or dressing; increasing the ability to play with age appropriate socialization skills; learning to write more legibly; and learning strategies to stay calm and focused for engagement in the daily routine.
KG Bound Kids
KG Bound Kids is a program within the occupational therapy clinic, part of the Unified Clinics, at Western Michigan University. This program is appropriate for typically developing children ages 4-5 who will be going to kindergarten within the next year. Each child is paired with a graduate level occupational therapy student from Western Michigan University.
Activities target gross and fine motor skills, pre-academic skills, attention and regulation.
KG Bound Kids runs for 12 weeks, meeting once per week.
