The Department of Civil and Construction Engineering conducts considerable research supporting the improvement and operation of the national infrastructure.

Research centers, laboratories and institutes

The center evaluates the materials, design, construction, repair and maintenance of highway structures in harsh climates to improve their durability and prolong service life.

WMU's Laboratory of Earthquake and Structure Simulation (LESS) is a state-of-the-art facility for simulating earthquakes and the effects on small scale structures with equipment for performing various seismic experiments, including shake table test, effective force test, pseudodynamic test in real time and with substructuring.

The TRCLC aims to address the nation's critical transportation challenges through the prism of livable communities. The Center’s primary goal is to improve affordable and environmentally sustainable transportation options for conventionally underserved communities with special attention paid to non-motorized travel, pedestrian and bicycle safety, job accessibility and 'smart' transport technologies.
