A student group from the Bronco Research Construction Center is being touted for their innovative approach to helping structures better withstand extreme weather, earthquakes and other threats to structures. The center is part of Western's College of Engineering and Applied Sciences.

Research underway by Western Michigan University's renowned Center of Excellence for Structural Durability will play an integral role in the future of infrastructure. Led by Dr. Upul Attanayake, several students are working with the Michigan Department of Transportation on a project to rebuild the Second Avenue bridge over Interstate 94 in Detroit—the first project of its kind in the world.

Fourth-year construction engineering student Zach Turner has been working as an intern with Walbridge as the company builds the new student center, set to open in fall 2022. It's a project that's cemented Turner's career plans—he already has a job offer from the company once he graduates.
