The Cap and Gown Exchange is a free graduation regalia loan program offered through Montgomery Essential Needs at Western Michigan University. We know that the cost of graduation attire can be a barrier for some students. This program ensures that all graduating Broncos have access to the cap and gown needed to celebrate their achievements at commencement.
How it works
- Apply: Complete the short application
- Pick Up: Regalia can be picked up during the week prior to graduation.
- Celebrate: Wear your cap and gown proudly as you cross the stage.
- Return: Return the items within two weeks after your ceremony so another Bronco can use them.
Why this program matters
The average cost of graduation regalia can be a financial burden. For some students, it’s the final obstacle standing between them and celebrating years of hard work.
The Cap and Gown Exchange makes graduation accessible for everyone — because commencement isn’t just about clothing, it’s about achievement, family, and community. By removing this barrier, we help ensure that all Broncos are able to participate fully in their graduation experience.
It’s also about sustainability: most gowns are made from polyester, a non-biodegradable material. An estimated 80–100 million gowns are already in landfills.
By reusing gowns through the Cap and Gown Exchange, WMU students reduce waste, extend the life of garments and celebrate commencement in a way that’s both meaningful and environmentally responsible.
Who can apply
- Undergraduate and Master’s students graduating from WMU
- Students experiencing financial hardship who would benefit from borrowing regalia
- Students committed to returning the items in good condition so the program can continue supporting others
