General summary

Supervises command officers, patrol officers, detectives, and other areas of Public Safety. Serves as the second in command of the department. Develops and recommends a departmental budget that reflects the needs of the office through effective monitoring of office finances.

Major duties

  • Coordinates and directs the patrol division and detective bureau to minimize the amount of crime on campus and close criminal complaints reported to the department.
  • Ensures the presence of a competent and motivated police force through the direction of recruitment and in-service training of personnel.
  • Remains current in new laws and ideas in law enforcement. Revises, develops and implements department policies and procedures.
  • Maintains the department’s evidence room to ensure evidence is handled in accordance with legal requirements.

Minimum qualifications

Minimum qualifications based upon job documentation and industry best practices. Any current employees not meeting these qualifications will be grandfathered until they move to a different job.

Required education

  • Bachelor's degree in related field from an accredited institution.

Required experience

  • Five years' relevant experience.
  • Supervisory experience.

Physical requirements

Moderate work occasionally working in difficult position or with physical demands such as continuously lifting or moving materials from 25 to 50 pounds and occasionally lifting or moving materials greater than 50 pounds.

Working conditions

Work is performed in an environment with extremely disagreeable or hazardous working conditions with exposure to any number of elements and hazards on a continual basis.
