General summary
Directs all aspects of the College of Aviation flight education and ensures the program’s compliance with state and federal regulations.
Major duties
- Establishes, documents and maintains curriculum and course requirements for flight instruction.
- Develops and maintains policies and procedures to standardize flight operations and ensure consistent instruction.
- Coordinates flight operations with fleet scheduling and local airport operations.
- Hires, trains and evaluates performance of full-time and part-time staff, and ensures that instructional staff possess necessary certification.
- Monitors student progress and serves as instructor-of-record certifying appropriate progress.
- Establishes and enforces safety standards.
- Develops and manages budgets for flight instruction and operations.
- Leads or participates in College of Aviation planning and management committees.
- Participates in College of Aviation recruiting and advising activities.
Minimum qualifications
Minimum qualifications based upon job documentation and industry best practices. Any current employees not meeting these qualifications will be grandfathered until they move to a different job.
Required education
- Bachelor’s degree in a related field from an accredited institution.
Required experience
- Five years’ relevant experience.
- Strong interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills.
- Budget management experience.
- Supervisory or lead experience.
- Policy development experience.
Required other
- Federal Aviation Administration Certified Flight Instructor.
- Federal Aviation Administration Airline Transport Pilot Certificate.
- Flight certification in relevant equipment.
Physical requirements
Office or other indoor work with minimal physical demands such as occasionally lifting or moving materials less than 25 pounds.
Working conditions
Work is performed with exposure to any number of elements which may occasionally require some precautions such as safety glasses, protective clothing, ear protection, etc.
