General summary

Prepares and reviews University and Western Michigan University Foundation tax returns and other corporate reports. Provides advice to University departments in complying with current tax law.

Major duties

  • Serves as the University's primary consultant for all internal and external tax matters.
  • Manages tax compliance including the filings of tax forms.
  • Ensures the accuracy of reporting and generate tuition statements for students in the US and Canada.
  • Assesses taxable benefits for employees.
  • Reviews international tax forms for completeness and accuracy including requests for treaty benefits prior to approving the payment.
  • Reviews contracts with foreign vendors for tax language to mitigate risk. Compiles and remits all foreign transactions exceeding the reporting threshold for reporting to government agencies.
  • Provides expertise to the University to ensure compliance with all current tax laws and regulations.

Minimum qualifications

Minimum qualifications based upon job documentation and industry best practices. Any current employees not meeting these qualifications will be grandfathered until they move to a different job.

Required education

  • Bachelor's degree in related field from an accredited institution.

Required experience

  • Five years' relevant experience.
  • Professional accounting or financial background with reporting and taxation experience.

Required other

  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA)

Physical requirements

Office or other indoor work with minimal physical demands such as occasionally lifting or moving materials less than 25 pounds.

Working conditions

Work is generally performed in a well-lit, temperature-controlled indoor environment with occasional exposure to the outdoors or any number of elements.
