General summary
Oversees the environmental health and safety unit within Human Resources.
Major duties
- Serves as a member of the human resources management team, including policy development and administration and legal compliance with internal and external regulations and policies. Advises and makes recommendations to the associate vice president for human resources/chief human resources officer and other University officials regarding human resource issues.
- Provides management and oversight of staff activities and establishes divisional priorities.
- Evaluates health, safety and fire hazards on campus and counsels departments on reducing their employees’ exposure to hazards.
- Administers workers’ compensation benefit program. Investigates employee job-related injuries and illnesses and recommends necessary action to reduce the possibility of recurrence.
- Develops programs for new compliance with environmental, health and safety regulations and updates existing programs.
- Educates the University community in order to prevent injury, death, fines and legal actions against the University.
- Enforces all environmental, occupational and fire safety regulations.
- Ensures compliance with local, state and federal environmental health and safety codes, regulations and ordinances to maintain campus health and safety and minimize institutional liability.
- Researches and remains current on the best available solutions to the environmental, health and safety problems on campus and communicates them to the campus community.
- Trains faculty, staff and students on occupational health and safety issues.
Minimum qualifications
Minimum qualifications based upon job documentation and industry best practices. Any current employees not meeting these qualifications will be grandfathered until they move to a different job.
Required education
- Bachelor's degree in related field from an accredited institution.
Required experience
- Eight years' relevant experience.
- Supervisory or lead experience.

- Relevant industry certification.
Physical requirements
Office or other indoor work with minimal physical demands such as occasionally lifting or moving materials less than 25 pounds.
Working conditions
Work is performed with exposure to any number of elements which may occasionally require some precautions such as safety glasses, protective clothing, ear protection, etc.
