General summary

Designs, codes, tests and debugs application software that meets the needs of the University and user groups.

Major duties

  • Works with end-users to gather and document requirements for existing or new application software. Evaluates existing or new software and recommends solutions which may include upgrades to existing software or implementation of new applications.
  • Works with vendors to document hardware and network requirements for new or upgraded enterprise applications.
  • Collaborates with end-users and department management to prepare and monitor project plans for system implementation. Creates user access as necessary and ensures the confidentiality and reliability of access and data.
  • Installs, configures, tests and debugs software to ensure it meets documented user needs.
  • Documents requirements for interfaces to other University or external systems. Maintains all application and system documentation according to University and professional standards.
  • Writes programming code. Installs, tests and debugs interfaces.
  • Works closely with end-users to evaluate and document workflow, procedure changes, and end-user training documentation.
  • Evaluates software patches and upgrades to determine impact on procedures, databases or other end-user work, and recommends plans to implement patches and upgrades.
  • Works with software vendors to evaluate software and resolve system performance issues.
  • Ensures that all application software meets University information technology standards and current professional standards.

Minimum qualifications

Minimum qualifications based upon job documentation and industry best practices. Any current employees not meeting these qualifications will be grandfathered until they move to a different job.

Required education

  • Bachelor’s degree in related field from an accredited institution, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Required experience

  • Five years’ relevant experience.
  • Strong interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience maintaining system and user documentation.
  • Project planning experience.

Physical requirements

Office or other indoor work with minimal physical demands such as occasionally lifting or moving materials less than 25 pounds.

Working conditions

Work is generally performed in a well-lit, temperature-controlled indoor environment with occasional exposure to the outdoors or any number of elements.
