General summary

Provides career planning advice and consultations to students and alumni. Designs and delivers classroom instruction, workshops, special events and publications.

Major duties

  • Advises and educates students and recent alumni about career assessment, exploration, decision making, negotiation, sensitive issues, professional development and job search strategies. Conducts weekly office hours and one-on-one appointments.
  • Plans, develops and implements programs, seminars and events to guide students to explore and select a college major, develop professional readiness, implement a career development plan and perform a job search.
  • Develops and teaches career development courses, in addition to career modules for required integration into curriculum. Develops content, lesson plans, assignments and assessments for the classroom.
  • Administers and interprets career-related assessments, including those to identify talents and strengths. Coaches individual students based on assessment outcomes.
  • Develops and maintains partnerships between employers, alumni, the business community and students. Manages projects, including budgets for recruiting events and programs involving external partners. Conducts site visits to evaluate current and potential sites for experiential learning opportunities, including externships and internships.
  • Collaborates with faculty to assure confluence of professional development efforts with curricula of the college.
  • May engage with wellness efforts, including coaching students in healthy behaviors.
  • Hires, trains, evaluates and supervises staff and student employees.

Minimum qualifications

Minimum qualifications based upon job documentation and industry best practices. Any current employees not meeting these qualifications will be grandfathered until they move to a different job.

Required education

  • Master's degree in related field from an accredited institution.

Required experience

  • Two years' relevant experience.
  • Strong interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills.
  • Knowledge of employment practices, relevant labor markets and career development models.

Required other

  • Ability to work irregular shifts and extended hours, including weekends and holidays.
  • Ability to travel during concentrated recruitment periods.

Physical requirements

Office or other indoor work with minimal physical demands such as occasionally lifting or moving materials less than 25 pounds.

Working conditions

Work is generally performed in a well-lit, temperature-controlled indoor environment with occasional exposure to the outdoors or any number of elements.
