General summary

Protects the University’s physical and financial assets through risk management efforts.

Major duties

  • Identifies and analyzes the University’s exposure to loss concerning its physical and financial assets. Protects the University’s assets, employing risk management practices.
  • Represents the interests of the University regarding the Michigan University Self-insurance Corporation. Protects the University against liability claims.
  • Oversees the University’s benefits fund. Ensures appropriate reserve balances and prepares financial statements.
  • Manages external University properties, including negotiating, reviewing, and approving favorable contracts. Serves as landlord and initial sales contact.
  • Plans, funds and oversees safety-related projects.
  • Serves as representative for University in state and regional groups.
  • Completes various special business and finance projects as assigned by the Assistant Vice President and the Vice President.
  • Supervises professional staff.

Minimum qualifications

Minimum qualifications based upon job documentation and industry best practices. Any current employees not meeting these qualifications will be grandfathered until they move to a different job.

Required education

  • Bachelor's degree in related field from an accredited institution.

Required experience

  • Five years' relevant experience.
  • Experience in insurance buying or underwriting insurance policies.
  • Experience with environmental, health and safety business, emergency management, facilities management, higher education operations and compliance.

Required other

  • Ability to work irregular shifts and extended hours, including evenings and weekends and on call duties.

Physical requirements

Office or other indoor work with minimal physical demands such as occasionally lifting or moving materials less than 25 pounds.

Working conditions

Work is generally performed in a well-lit, temperature-controlled indoor environment with occasional exposure to the outdoors or any number of elements.
