General summary

Manages the hardware, software, projects and employees of the W.E. Upjohn Center for the Study of Geographical Change. Develops protocols and procedures for creation, management and publishing digital spatial data.

Major duties

  • Initiates, plans, leads, schedules and completes geographic information system (GIS) projects for the internal business and external clients of the Upjohn Center. Evaluates and reports progress toward completion. Develops strategies for enhancing the Upjohn Center's growth.
  • Establishes procedures for digitizing, geo-referencing and indexing of maps and other large format documents. Assesses needs and device protocols for data acquisition and handling of rare, delicate and other large format collections and works of art.
  • Installs, maintains, troubleshoots, supervises and upgrades the Upjohn Center's complex computational infrastructure. Manages the growth and development of equipment.
  • Maintains and updates University's licenses and server operating system. Trains faculty and staff. Maintains the Upjohn Center's training collaboration software.
  • Develops research proposals. Assists in the publishing of the Upjohn Center's productions. Maintains and promotes documented standards for creation of work within the Upjohn Center.
  • Maintains relations with commercialization partners and provides technical interpretation for contract negotiations.
  • Develops professional development plans and provides training and technical support to students, faculty and other system users.
  • Supervises Upjohn Center staff.
  • Participates in other projects as assigned.

Minimum qualifications

Minimum qualifications based upon job documentation and industry best practices. Any current employees not meeting these qualifications will be grandfathered until they move to a different job.

Required education

  • Bachelor's degree in related field from an accredited institution.

Required experience

  • Three years’ relevant experience.

Physical requirements

Office or other indoor work with minimal physical demands such as occasionally lifting or moving materials less than 25 pounds.

Working conditions

Work is generally performed in a well-lit, temperature-controlled indoor environment with occasional exposure to the outdoors or any number of elements.
