General summary

Assists with execution of legal responsibilities. Prepares and reviews legal documents.

Major duties

  • Creates and maintains University system to comply with the Freedom of Information Act duties, including evaluating requests, collecting documents and drafting responses to requests.
  • Creates and revises agreements, contracts, releases, grant documents and other documents. Ensures compliance with local, state and federal law and University policy. Advises on legal significance of language. Drafts language to comply with law and policy.
  • Monitors and assists outside counsel in litigation preparation. Investigates and analyzes facts and determines potential evidence and witnesses. Compiles information for the litigation update to the President, Board of Trustees, administration and outside auditors.
  • Reviews subpoenas to ensure legal compliance and coordinates responses University wide. Reviews release authorizations regarding compliance with federal law.
  • Assists with administrative responsibilities, including budget issues and payment and monitoring of legal bills.

Minimum qualifications

Minimum qualifications based upon job documentation and industry best practices. Any current employees not meeting these qualifications will be grandfathered until they move to a different job.

Required education

  • Bachelor's degree in related field from an accredited institution, or two years' college coursework and Paralegal/Legal Assistant Certificate.

Required experience

  • Three years' relevant experience.

Physical requirements

Office or other indoor work with minimal physical demands such as occasionally lifting or moving materials less than 25 pounds.

Working conditions

Work is generally performed in a well-lit, temperature-controlled indoor environment with occasional exposure to the outdoors or any number of elements.
