General summary
Manages the University’s power plant, providing reliable steam and electrical power to the Kalamazoo campus and other facilities and ensuring compliance with state and federal regulations.
Major duties
- Establishes and maintains policies and procedures for power plant operations.
- Hires, trains and evaluates performance of full-time and part-time staff.
- Oversees labor relations. Ensures a productive and safe work environment and compliance with human resources policies, procedures and collective bargaining agreements.
- Manages power plant operating and capital budgets and billing to external facilities or agencies receiving power from the power-plant.
- Ensures compliance with state and federal regulations governing power generation and distribution.
- Develops and presents short and long range plans to improve plant performance, energy usage and environmental compliance.
Minimum qualifications
Minimum qualifications based upon job documentation and industry best practices. Any current employees not meeting these qualifications will be grandfathered until they move to a different job.
Required education
- Bachelor’s degree in a related field from an accredited institution.
Required experience
- Five years’ relevant experience.
- Supervisory experience in a collective bargaining environment.
- Strong interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills.
- Project management experience.
- Budget management experience.
- Experience managing contractors or vendors.
- Experience administering a collective bargaining agreement.
- Knowledge of state and federal regulations governing power generation.
Required other
- NIULPE (National Institute for the Uniform Licensing of Power Engineers) Class 1 or equivalent.
Physical requirements
Office or other indoor work with minimal physical demands such as occasionally lifting or moving materials less than 25 pounds.
Working conditions
Work is performed with exposure to any number of elements which may occasionally require some precautions such as safety glasses, protective clothing, ear protection, etc.
