General summary
Under the direction of the General Counsel, provides legal advice to the University.
Major duties
- Provides timely and competent legal advice to the University administration on a variety of legal issues. Remains up-to-date on legal issues affecting higher education.
- Drafts, reviews and administers contracts.
- Assists with compliance efforts, including but not limited to the Freedom of Information Act, Health Insurance and Portability and Accountability and the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act.
- Assists with student affairs, student discipline and Title IX legal issues.
- Assists with employment and labor law issues.
Minimum qualifications
Minimum qualifications based upon job documentation and industry best practices. Any current employees not meeting these qualifications will be grandfathered until they move to a different job.
Required education
- Juris Doctorate degree from an accredited institution.
Required experience
- Five years' relevant experience.
- Strong interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills.
- Experience practicing law, with litigation or administrative experience.
Required other
- Licensed to practice law in the State of Michigan.
Physical requirements
Office or other indoor work with minimal physical demands such as occasionally lifting or moving materials less than 25 pounds.
Working conditions
Work is generally performed in a well-lit, temperature-controlled indoor environment with occasional exposure to the outdoors or any number of elements.
