General summary
Manages and provides medical services for intercollegiate athletics. Provides comprehensive health care to student-athletes.
Major duties
- Assists with designing, implementing, and administering comprehensive treatment and rehabilitation programs for injuries.
- Assists in the daily management of the sports medicine operation.
- Provides comprehensive healthcare to student-athletes, including evaluation, treatment, and rehabilitation of injuries to return athletes to a competitive performance level.
- Evaluates injuries and illnesses sustained by student-athletes and provides assessment and appropriate care according to established protocols and procedures. Maintains and updates the University medical services policy and procedure manual, including emergency action plans.
- Supervises athletic training staff. Assists in the supervision of student trainers and graduate assistant staff.
- Supervises coordinates, and provides training and educational opportunities to students in the athletic training education program.
- May oversee the athletic insurance management plan. May communicate with athletes and parents regarding the athletic accident claims process.
- Provides secondary athletic training coverage for summer conditioning, home athletic events, visiting team coverage, and Conference Championship events.
- May evaluate student-athlete and NCAA compliance issues.
Minimum qualifications
Minimum qualifications based upon job documentation and industry best practices. Any current employees not meeting these qualifications will be grandfathered until they move to a different job.
Required education
- Master's degree in related field from an accredited institution.
Required experience
- Three years' relevant experience.
- Supervisory or lead experience.
- Strong interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills.
Required other
- National Athletic Trainers' Association Board of Certification (NATA BOC).
- First Aid/CPR/AED certification.
- American Red Cross Training Instructor certification or ability to obtain certification within probationary period.
- Michigan Athletic Trainer license or ability to obtain licensure by hire date.
- Ability to work irregular shifts and extended hours, including weekends and holidays.
Physical requirements
Light work with some physical demands such as continuously lifting or moving materials less than 25 pounds, but rarely moving more than 25 to 50 pounds.
Working conditions
Work is performed with exposure to any number of elements which may occasionally require some precautions such as safety glasses, protective clothing, ear protection, etc.
