General summary
Oversees daily operations of medical services within Intercollegiate Athletics at the University. Manages medical coverage for practices and competition, on and off campus, and during extended travel.
Major duties
- Prescribes, progresses, and monitors treatment and rehabilitation for athletic and non-athletic injuries, from acute and post-operative care through return to play. Maintains and recertifies all rehab equipment and electronic modalities. Fabricates custom bracing, taping, padding, and casting. Coordinates disability services for on- and off-campus needs.
- Triages, evaluates, diagnoses, and refers athletic and non-athletic injuries and illnesses, including mental health, orthopedic, concussion, and general medical conditions. Maintains broad knowledge of medical specialties to ensure accurate and timely referrals.
- Builds strong relationships with coaches and administrators through effective communication and education. Oversees medical staff coverage for all sport activities, resolves conflicts involving staff, athletes, coaches, and parents, and ensures continuity of care. Manages facility operations budget, medical supply inventory, and capital equipment.
- Conducts pre-participation screenings and reviews medical documentation to develop individualized care plans. Communicates with recruits and families, establishes concussion baselines, and educates on symptom reporting. Coordinates diagnostics, follow-up care, and external provider communication. Fits custom bracing, taping, and mouth guards, manages durable medical equipment, and organizes vaccine clinics
- Provides on-field care for emergent and non-emergent injuries during all athletic activities. Covers moderate to high-risk sports, including on-call overlap. Coordinates medical appointments, supports academic accommodations, and serves as liaison for officials’ and visiting teams’ urgent medical needs.
- Maintains knowledge of evidence-based practices and National Athletic Trainers’ Association (NATA) guidelines for catastrophic injuries. Conducts emergency response drills, coordinates CPR and AED certification, and updates emergency action plans. Develops care plans for high-risk athletes, prepares medical equipment, monitors supplies, tracks weather risks, and educates staff and athletes per National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) standards.
- Manages medical records per Michigan Public Health Code and facilitates access as needed. Coordinates communication on athlete health, supports redshirt and disqualification processes, and oversees equipment, supplies, and facility upkeep. Updates policies, manages youth camp coverage, conducts drug testing, and handles administrative tasks as assigned.
- Maintains compliance with Michigan Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA)and Board of Certification (BOC) requirements, including Continuing Education Units (CEU). Assists with event coverage for unassigned sports as needed.

Minimum qualifications
Minimum qualifications based upon job documentation and industry best practices. Any current employees not meeting these qualifications will be grandfathered until they move to a different job.
Required education
- Master's degree in related field from an accredited institution.
Required experience
- Three years' relevant experience.
- Supervisory or lead experience.
- Experience with NCAA Collegiate athletic training.
- Strong interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills.
Required other
- Board of Certification- Certified Athletic Trainer.
- State of Michigan- Licensed Athletic Trainer or eligible.
- American Red Cross- CPR/AED for Professional Rescuer.
- Ability to work irregular shifts and extended hours, including weekends and holidays and on-call duties.
- Ability to travel
Physical requirements
Moderate work occasionally working in difficult position or with physical demands such as continuously lifting or moving materials from 25 to 50 pounds and occasionally lifting or moving materials greater than 50 pounds.
Working conditions
Work is performed in an environment with exposure to somewhat disagreeable or hazardous conditions.
