General summary
Leads, directs, and ensures the efficient building, configuration, installation, monitoring, testing, support, and maintenance of the University's physical data network infrastructure.
Major duties
- Collaborates with other departments across campus to ensure the needs of the University Community are met. Consults project engineers and managers to ensure technology is suitably deployed.
- Conducts complex technical evaluations, design reviews, and recommends proposed physical and logical designs
- Contributes to the planning development, implementation, and administration of multiple projects. Communicates with capital and remodeling projects to ensure network standards are met and project installations are completed on time.
- Leads and directs outside contract workers in installing indoor and outdoor fiber and copper cables across campus.
- Maintains inventory of equipment and supplies. Tracks project deliverables using appropriate tools.
- Collaborates with industry manufacturers and suppliers to secure equipment and parts to support the University's data network.
- Maintains, installs, upgrades, and locates campus underground infrastructure.
- Contributes to the development and administration of network disaster recovery plans
- Hires, trains, evaluates, and supervises staff and student employees.
Minimum qualifications
Minimum qualifications based upon job documentation and industry best practices. Any current employees not meeting these qualifications will be grandfathered until they move to a different job.
Required education
- Bachelor’s degree in a related field from an accredited institution, or a Bachelor’s degree in a non-related field from an accredited institution combined with relevant experience.
Required experience
- Five years’ relevant experience.
- Supervisory or lead experience.
Required other
- Must be available to provide system maintenance or end-user support outside of normal business hours.

- Relevant industry certification.
Physical requirements
Light work with some physical demands such as continuously lifting or moving materials less than 25 pounds, but rarely moving more than 25 to 50 pounds.
Working conditions
Work is performed with exposure to any number of elements which may occasionally require some precautions such as safety glasses, protective clothing, ear protection, etc.
