General summary

Designs, installs and maintains hardware and operating systems supporting the University’s information technology infrastructure in a lead role.

Major duties

  • Designs and documents requirements for hardware, firmware, operating and storage systems to meet the University’s information technology needs.
  • Installs, configures, tests and debugs hardware and operating systems.
  • Evaluates and deploys patches, upgrades and enhancements.
  • Designs, documents and maintains backup, restore and disaster recovery procedures to ensure the reliability and availability of information technology resources.
  • Monitors system and network performance, investigates and resolves problems affecting system performance.
  • Works closely with vendors to define and evaluate hardware and software specifications and resolve performance issues.
  • Develops, documents and promotes policies and procedures which comply with University policies and meet professional standards.
  • Serves as a technical resource to information technology teams and University uses groups.
  • Provides training to end users or develops programs or documentation for end-user training. Provides technical support to end-users.

Minimum qualifications

Minimum qualifications based upon job documentation and industry best practices. Any current employees not meeting these qualifications will be grandfathered until they move to a different job.

Required education

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field from an accredited institution or a Bachelor’s degree in a non-related field from an accredited institution combined with relevant experience.

Required experience

  • Five years’ relevant experience.
  • Strong interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience installing and maintaining hardware and software.
  • Experience maintaining system documentation.
  • Experience working on cross functional information technology teams.
  • Programming experience.
  • Project management experience.

Required other

  • Applicable industry certification or relevant experience.
  • Must be available to provide system maintenance or end-user support outside of normal business hours.

Physical requirements

Office or other indoor work with minimal physical demands such as occasionally lifting or moving materials less than 25 pounds.

Working conditions

Work is generally performed in a well-lit temperature-controlled indoor environment with occasional exposure to the outdoors or any number of elements.
