General summary

Provides leadership in the areas of medical services, to include athletic training, mental health counseling, drug testing and nutrition services. Supervises the staff in the athletic department's athletic training services and strength and conditioning program. Under direction, performs a variety of support functions to include serving as a liaison to the University's Title IX coordinator and creating educational opportunities to support student-athlete success. Supervises various sports as directed.

Major duties

  • Provides leadership and supervision to the medical services staff. Designs, implements and administers comprehensive treatment and rehabilitation programs for injuries. Develops the university medical services policy and procedures manual, which includes development of emergency action plans.
  • Oversees the operating budget for medical services, the medical services unit inventory and purchases medical supplies and equipment.
  • Supervises the athletic insurance management plan. Communicates with athletes and parents regarding the athletic accident claims process. Provides comprehensive healthcare to student athletes, including evaluation, treatment and rehabilitation of injuries to return athletes to a competitive performance level.
  • Provides comprehensive health care to assigned athletic teams. Evaluates injuries and illnesses sustained by student-athletes and provides assessment and appropriate care according to established procedures. Supervises the University and National Collegiate Athletic Association drug testing programs.
  • Provides leadership and supervision to the athletics strength and conditioning staff. Monitors strength and conditioning programs to ensure safety and compliance with industry standards and best practices.
  • Evaluates and implements the nutritional services necessary to assist student-athlete well-being and development.
  • Works with health care facility and the mental health counseling team to ensure student-athletes have appropriate access to mental health, mindfulness and counseling services.
  • Serves as liaison to the University’s Title IX Coordinator and assists in programming efforts to support the University Sexual Misconduct Reporting Policy.
  • Serves as a member of the executive leadership team, providing strategic direction on the affairs of the entire department of athletics.
  • Under direction , serves as a sport supervisor for specific intercollegiate athletic programs. Serves on the department's sport supervision team, providing streamlined policy and management of all sport programs.

Required education

  • Bachelor's degree in related field from an accredited institution.

Required experience

  • Eight years' relevant experience.
  • Supervisory experience.
  • Strong interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated experience with athletic training, medical services or strength conditioning.

Required other

  • National Athletic Trainers’ Association Board of Certification (NATA BOC).
  • First Aid/CPR/AED certification.
  • American Red Cross Training Instructor certification.
  • Michigan Athletic Trainer license or ability to obtain licensure by hire date.
  • Ability to work irregular shifts and extended hours, including weekends and holidays.

Physical requirements

Office or other indoor work with minimal physical demands such as occasionally lifting or moving materials less than 25 pounds.

Working conditions

Work is generally performed in a well-lit, temperature-controlled indoor environment with occasional exposure to the outdoors or any number of elements.
