General summary

Oversees and manages the University’s emergency planning and preparedness activities. Oversees ongoing development, implementation, and maintenance of an all-hazards approach to prepare for, respond to, mitigate, and recover in the event of an emergency.

Major duties

  • Develops, implements, and maintains emergency preparedness documents as well as the emergency management website. Conducts comprehensive risk assessments for buildings and departments. Designs and facilitates disaster exercises.
  • Oversees compliance with federal, and state reporting regulations including evidence storage and retention.
  • Manages the emergency operation center during emergency response and recovery. Chairs the critical incident response planning committee.
  • Writes annual security and fire safety reports. Reviews regulation changes and implements new protocols. Collaborates with other departments and compiles data. Administers the campus security authority training program.
  • Manages the University’s campus-wide emergency notification system. Administers emergency notifications and timely warnings through text messages and phone calls to the University population. Updates and develops associated general orders, usage protocols, user manuals, and the generation of activation reports.
  • Creates customized training and interactive participation seminars. Presents training on various topics, ranging from general safety and security overview to workplace violence. Develops exercise scenarios and conducts and evaluates exercises involving identified threats and risks to the University.
  • Serves as a consultant to building coordinators and emergency volunteer team members, providing input on security and safety concerns.
  • Hires, trains, evaluates and supervises staff.

Minimum qualifications

Minimum qualifications based upon job documentation and industry best practices. Any current employees not meeting these qualifications will be grandfathered until they move to a different job.

Required education

  • Bachelor's degree in related field from an accredited institution.

Required experience

  • Three years' relevant experience.
  • Strong interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills.
  • Knowledge of state and federal safety and health regulations and their application.

Physical requirements

Office or other indoor work with minimal physical demands such as occasionally lifting or moving materials less than 25 pounds.

Working conditions

Work is performed with exposure to any number of elements which may occasionally require some precautions such as safety glasses, protective clothing, ear protection, etc.
