General summary

Responsible for the coordination and implementation of the University's first-year experience seminar course and the creation of a second-year experience. Serves as a resource to staff while identifying needs, resolving challenges and sustaining program requirements. Collaborates with other University departments to craft a strategy that supports incoming families.

Major duties

  • Plans, coordinates and evaluates course curriculum, course logistics, learning outcomes, and program implementation for first year and second-year experience courses. Assists with student and instructor end-of-semester assessments, prepares final reports, and makes recommendations for improvement.
  • Collaborates with University department teams to develop strategy, materials, messages, and programs to holistically support parents and families as their students transition to the University. Researches best practices and serves as a main point of contact in order to support families.
  • Provides on-going training through Summer and Fall semesters for primary and student instructors, focusing on preparation, student support skills, campus resources, and diversity, equity and inclusion practices in the classroom.
  • Collaborates and actively forms partnerships with other University departments, programs and colleges to develop, improve, and enhance the first-year experience and second-year experience courses. Researches best practices and pursues creative strategies to sustain and enhance the first-year and second-year courses.
  • Provides direct supervision to student program managers, including training, identifying and resolving challenges, and evaluation. Provides direction to primary instructors and student co-facilitators during summer and fall semester.
  • Serves on University committees that advance the mission and goals of the first-year experience course and the University. Actively attends and represents the department at University events.
  • Teaches first-year experience courses.
  • Hires, trains, evaluates and supervises student employees.

Minimum qualifications

Minimum qualifications based upon job documentation and industry best practices. Any current employees not meeting these qualifications will be grandfathered until they move to a different job.

Required education

  • Master's degree in related field from an accredited institution.

Required experience

  • Three years' relevant experience.
  • Supervisory or lead experience.
  • Strong interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills.
  • Requires excellent attention to detail and organization.
  • Experience in conflict management.
  • Experience with public speaking.
  • Experience with student support, training and development.
  • Advanced knowledge of first-year and second-year student development.
  • Knowledge of first-year seminar high impact practices, higher education retention, and program planning.
  • Commitment to incorporating diversity, equity, and inclusion practices into the programs.
  • Knowledge of family support methods.

Required other

  • Ability to work irregular shifts and extended hours, including weekends and holidays.

Physical requirements

Office or other indoor work with minimal physical demands such as occasionally lifting or moving materials less than 25 pounds.

Working conditions

Work is generally performed in a well-lit, temperature-controlled indoor environment with occasional exposure to the outdoors or any number of elements.
