General summary

Provides a wide variety of administrative services for the Michigan Small Business Development Center which includes administration of the University’s student accelerator program.

Major duties

  • May resolve complex customer problems and questions regarding starting a business, access to capital, withholding taxes, various federal, state and local programs focused on addressing needs of small business owners. Explains procedures diplomatically and effectively, responds independently and in a timely accurate manner to general and complex inquiries.
  • Generates training reports, economic impact reports, counselor activity reports, and provides other analysis, correspondence as required. Maintains client records in compliance with relevant government agencies.
  • Leads budget support and purchasing processes for the department and grant accounts; completes transfers, prepares and analyzes budget reports. Leads monthly budget monitoring and reconciling. Develops and submits quarterly financial reports.
  • Responsible for prompt and accurate intake of clients into the Small Business Development Center Network. Provides administrative support for the University’s student accelerator program. This includes contacting students, updating and maintaining databases, generating reports, coordinating internal and external events, processing invoices, and overseeing student interns.
  • Speaks knowledgably about relevant government programs available to the public.
  • Coordinates the department’s annual training calendar and sponsorship program for Southwest Michigan's seven county region. Meets with local and county chamber presidents, economic developers and external partners to negotiate training and sponsorship contracts and schedule training events. Requests, creates and distributes regional marketing materials, both print and internet based. In charge of communicating marketing efforts through the region. Coordinates all marketing efforts between the University and external partners.
  • Maintains current knowledge of relevant loan products, other small business financing options, and available business support resources including public, private and nonprofit programs. Supports the department’s initiatives through the development of expertise, establishing contacts, and contributing to programs that support the various business communities.
  • Assists in the marketing efforts of the University’s student accelerator program through social media, email and other written forms of communication. Makes content updates on Program's University website.

Minimum qualifications

Minimum qualifications based upon job documentation and industry best practices. Any current employees not meeting these qualifications will be grandfathered until they move to a different job.

Required education

  • High school diploma or equivalent.

Required experience

  • Three years' relevant experience.
  • Desire for continuous lifelong learning.

Physical requirements

Office or other indoor work with minimal physical demands such as occasionally lifting or moving materials less than 25 pounds.

Working conditions

Work is generally performed in a well-lit, temperature-controlled indoor environment with occasional exposure to the outdoors or any number of elements.
