General summary

Directs the architecture and design division for facilities management, providing leadership for University design of construction projects.

Major duties

  • Directs projects with design professionals for project inception, scoping, budgeting and team creations for successful project execution. Delivers projects within budget and on time.
  • Develops project timelines and priorities. Directs projects from planning and conceptual design through construction and project closeout. Ensures all projects meet University and professional standards, University brand identity, and codes.
  • Monitors architectural and interior-related issues in facility renewal and construction projects, identifying trends or issues and develops and implements improvements.
  • Ensures all project design deliverables are on time per required compliance with innovative quality design solutions extending life-cycle performance and maintenance. Reviews all construction documents before they are issued for implementation.
  • Directs architectural and interior design staff, with engineering and construction professionals for the design and construction of various sized projects. Leads strategic partnerships with University department leaders impacting facility renewal planning for the campus community. Leads strategic space planning for pre-design studies and project vetting with campus department leadership to determine project viability, costing, and scope.
  • Directs deferred maintenance building interior assessment, conducts annual audits, and develops renewal recommendations. Resolves construction related issues and responds to client requests. Develops departmental and divisional processes to ensure quality assurance control to maintain and pursue University standards.
  • Communicates with clients on all aspects of the project. Communicates with division directors, managers, supervisors and others in the campus community regarding project planning and construction.
  • Serves as the liaison for campus inter-departmental meetings regarding project coordination with special events, project planning and prioritization, and ensuring projects are on schedule and on target per expectations of the project.
  • Oversees signage of time and material contracts, vendor oversight, and provides leadership for signage standards, and signage website portal interface. Maintains a knowledge of new products and technology related to architecture and design.

Minimum qualifications based upon job documentation and industry best practices. Any current employees not meeting these qualifications will be grandfathered until they move to a different job.

Required education

  • Bachelor's degree in related field from an accredited institution.

Required experience

  • Five years' relevant experience.
  • Supervisory or lead experience.
  • Strong interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills.
  • Project management experience.
  • Knowledge of remodeling and construction procedures.
  • Budget management experience.
  • Experience managing contractors or vendors.
  • Experience with office software, including word processing, spreadsheets and presentation software.
  • Working knowledge of computer aided design and drafting software.

Desired qualifications

Desired education

  • Bachelor's degree in Architecture from an accredited institution.

Desired other

  • State licensed Architect.

Physical requirements

Light work with some physical demands such as continuously lifting or moving materials less than 25 pounds, but rarely moving more than 25 to 50 pounds.

Working conditions

Work is performed with exposure to any number of elements which may occasionally require some precautions such as safety glasses, protective clothing, ear protection, etc.
