General summary

Provides leadership and oversight for the planning, design, and construction of University facilities projects.

Major duties

  • Directs design and construction activities for capital and renovation projects of varying scope and scale, from planning through closeout. Ensures projects align with University standards, brand identity, and applicable codes.
  • Oversees project budgets and timelines, promoting innovative and sustainable design solutions.
  • Leads collaboration with external design professionals to define project scope, budget, and execution strategy.
  • Leads strategic collaboration with University stakeholders to support facility renewal planning and assess project feasibility, scope, and cost. Oversees architectural and interior elements of facility renewal and construction projects.
  • Directs assessments of building interiors and deferred maintenance needs, including annual audits and asset renewal recommendations.
  • Communicates with clients and stakeholders to ensure effective planning, design, and execution of projects. Serves as a backup to senior leadership in Planning, Design, and Construction.
  • Directs the assignment and management of multiple projects simultaneously, ranging in complexity and scale, utilizing both internal and external labor resources. Collaborates with procurement personnel to determine appropriate project delivery and contracting methods.
  • Oversees the use of multiple time and materials contracts to ensure efficient and effective project execution.
  • Monitors project progress to ensure alignment with plans, specifications, budgets, schedules, and client expectations. Oversees the management of project records, budgets, and closeout documentation.
  • Identifies trends and areas for improvement and implements updates to design guidelines. Develops and refines departmental processes to enhance efficiency, quality assurance, and customer service in support of the University’s mission.

Minimum qualifications

Minimum qualifications based upon job documentation and industry best practices. Any current employees not meeting these qualifications will be grandfathered until they move to a different job.

Required education

  • Bachelor's degree in related field from an accredited institution.

Required experience

  • Eight years' relevant experience.
  • Experience supervising remodels, alterations and construction projects.
  • Knowledge of remodeling and construction procedures, including working with professional design consultation and construction contractors in managing multi-discipline projects.
  • Experience with labor law and prevailing wage.
  • Strong interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience with completing projects on time.
  • Budget management experience.

Physical requirements

Light work with some physical demands such as continuously lifting or moving materials less than 25 pounds, but rarely moving more than 25 to 50 pounds. Visit jobsites, cross uneven ground with construction hazards, climb ladders and go to heights

Working conditions

Work is performed with exposure to any number of elements which may occasionally require some precautions such as safety glasses, protective clothing, ear protection, etc. Requires high energy to visit jobs, manage people and budgets and respond to senior administrators and clients.
