Network Engineer Senior

General summary

Programs, analyzes, and makes recommendations concerning existing and proposed network systems. Maintains hardware and software supporting the University’s information technology needs.

Major duties

  • Establishes and documents hardware and software requirements to ensure the reliability of the University’s information technology networks, and to meet University needs and professional standards.
  • Installs and configures network hardware and software. Troubleshoots complex networking issues. Maintains, tests, and implements firewall policies and procedures.
  • Creates and documents programs to monitor network security and performance and to automate network maintenance procedures.
  • Reviews anomalous patterns to ensure data confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
  • Investigates and documents network security breaches and applies University policies and procedures to resolve violations.
  • Documents standards and procedures for network maintenance.
  • Works with vendors and contractors to supervise the installation of new network equipment and to ensure network project requirements are met.
  • Develops and presents recommendations for network growth to information technology planning groups.
  • Provides training to information technology staff or develops programs or documentation for related training.

Minimum qualifications

Required education

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field from an accredited institution, or a Bachelor’s degree in a non-related field from an accredited institution combined with relevant experience.

Required experience

  • Five years’ relevant experience.
  • Strong interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience developing and documenting standards and procedures.
  • Project management experience.
  • Vendor or contractor management experience.

Physical requirements

Office or other indoor work with minimal physical demands such as occasionally lifting or moving materials less than 25 pounds.

Working conditions

Work is generally performed in a well-lit, temperature-controlled indoor environment with occasional exposure to the outdoors or any number of elements.
