General summary

Leads the recruiting and yield of incoming first-year students from the Detroit area with an emphasis on creating relationships with high schools, college counseling organizations, other educational partners, prospective students and their families. This is a regional position is located in or near Wayne County, Michigan.

Major duties

  • Manages recruitment and yield efforts in Wayne County, Michigan to maximize market share and ensure effective enrollment of new students. Identifies and develops new opportunities and timely strategies to increase enrollment.
  • Measures and analyzes effectiveness of recruitment and yield strategies.
  • Promotes and represents the University at on and off-campus events, including high school visits, college fairs, and community events. Builds and maintains relationships with external stakeholders.
  • Represents the University on advisory boards, planning committees, and other community organizations.
  • Creates and monitors reports and analyzes data to identify trends and patterns that impact recruitment and yield.
  • Partners with team members and campus colleagues focusing on recruitment efforts that serve Wayne County and the Detroit area. Assists with the planning and execution of initiatives that will serve and attract students from different backgrounds and first-in-college students.
  • Reads and evaluates applications to make admission decisions for assigned geographical territory.
  • Remains current with contemporary admissions and enrollment management approaches and best practices, including best practices in recruitment communication technologies.

Minimum qualifications

Minimum qualifications based upon job documentation and industry best practices. Any current employees not meeting these qualifications will be grandfathered until they move to a different job.

Required education

  • Bachelor's degree in related field from an accredited institution.

Required experience

  • Two years' relevant experience.
  • Experience in admissions, recruitment, marketing, advising, college counseling, outreach or other related fields.
  • Strong interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently, while contributing to a team environment.

Required other

  • Selected candidate must live in or near Wayne County, Michigan. This is a remote position, and a designated home office or similar workspace is required.
  • Ability to travel frequently and routinely within the Detroit area.
  • Ability to travel to WMU’s main campus upon request.
  • Ability to work irregular shifts and extended hours, including evenings, weekends, and, occasionally, overnight travel.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Ability to travel elsewhere in Michigan and out-of-state, on a limited basis.

Physical requirements

Office or other indoor work with minimal physical demands such as occasionally lifting or moving materials less than 25 pounds. Position requires frequent travel to and from high schools, community colleges, and community-based organizations, including navigating the physical spaces and circumstances of those locations, including the ability to lift and maneuver boxes and other items up to 40 pounds.

Working conditions

Work is generally performed in a well-lit, temperature-controlled indoor environment with occasional exposure to the outdoors or any number of elements.
