General summary

Provides comprehensive academic advising services to undergraduate students in a lead capacity.

Major duties

  • Advises both enrolled and prospective undergraduate students on University, College and department academic curricular requirements, including admissions and general education requirements and requirements for specific programs, majors and minors.
  • Explains graduation requirements to students and provides information about course prerequisites, alternatives, and equivalents.
  • Creates, reviews and updates graduation plans with students to promote personal growth, academic excellence, career development, and timely degree completion
  • Fosters a safe and inclusive environment to advance equity.
  • Leads special projects for advising office i.e. New Student Orientation, Program Admissions, Welcome Week, etc.
  • Assists students with registration and may coordinate course scheduling.
  • Assists in recruitment and retention efforts.
  • May provide work direction to student employees and advising staff.
  • May evaluate student-athlete and NCAA compliance issues with athletic department personnel.

Minimum qualifications

Required education

  • Bachelor's degree in related field from an accredited institution

Required experience

  • Three years’ relevant experience.
  • Three year's professional academic advising experience.
  • Strong interpersonal written and verbal communications skills.
  • Three year's of experience working with college students.
  • Two year's of experience actively serving on department, college level or university wide committees.
  • Two year's of active participation in professional development centered around academic advising, diversity, equity and inclusion within academic advising and the student experience for traditionally underrepresented populations, retention and leadership.
  • Demonstrated awareness of the diverse needs of students, faculty and staff from underrepresented backgrounds.
  • Demonstrated commitment to working with culturally diverse students, faculty and staff from diverse backgrounds.
  • Demonstrated commitment to promote and participate in professional development focused on the unique needs of culturally diverse students, faculty and staff including culturally responsive advising.

Required other

  • Ability to work irregular shifts and extended hours, including evenings and weekends.

Desired education

  • Master's degree in a related field specific to hiring college, or higher education in general from an accredited institution

Physical requirements

Office or other indoor work with minimal physical demands such as occasionally lifting or moving materials less than 25 pounds.

Working conditions

Work is generally performed in a well-lit, temperature-controlled indoor environment with occasional exposure to the outdoors or any number of elements.
