General summary
Responsible for effectively expressing the administration’s voice, enhancing the visibility and thought leadership of its executives, and providing related writing and research support.
Major duties
- Leads in the creation of the president’s communications and thought leadership strategy and those of the University’s team of senior executives.
- Writes speeches, letters, opinion editorials, and other high-level communications primarily for the University president and, on occasion, for trustees and other vice presidents, which are directed toward alumni, business groups, community groups, donors, enrolled students, governmental entities, internal audiences, professional organizations, prospective students and other constituencies, that establishes, promotes and maintains a strong University brand.
- Assists the University’s executive leadership team with special communications projects. Directs communications to a wide variety of internal and external audiences to promote and maintain a strong University brand.
- Creates University-wide messages from the University administration and advances organizational culture by demonstrating mission focus, goal orientation, and a collaborative spirit in the discharge of duties.
- Creates, leverages, and schedules opportunities in local, state, and national venues. Targets editorial boards, business leadership groups, and gatherings of other key constituencies, for executive-level communications that promote the University.
- Supports the president’s office and chief of staff with the president’s social media presence.
Minimum qualifications
Minimum qualifications based upon job documentation and industry best practices. Any current employees not meeting these qualifications will be grandfathered until they move to a different job.
Required education
- Bachelor's degree in related field from an accredited institution.
Required experience
- Eight years' relevant experience.
- Experience in speech writing, executive communications strategy and developing a brand or executive voice (at least three years).
- Experience working under tight deadlines.
- Proven excellence in interpersonal, written and verbal communication.
- Ability to think, plan and execute on multiple projects simultaneously.
- Impeccable professionalism.
Physical requirements
Office or other work with minimal physical demands such as occasionally lifting or moving materials less than 25 pounds.
Working conditions
Work is generally performed in a well-lit, temperature-controlled indoor environment with occasional exposure to the outdoors or any number of elements.
