Supervisor Art Shop Ceramic and Sculpture

Assists students and faculty in the daily maintenance and organization of the ceramics and sculpture studios and curriculum.

• Assists faculty and students with safe and appropriate use of woodworking, metalworking, and digital fabrication machinery, including electric and gas welders, foundry equipment, plasma cutters, 3D printers, and laser cutters. May assist with demonstrations and group activities.
• Provides answers to student questions about the ceramic and sculpture studios and provides basic safety demonstrations for students as needed. May teach one ceramics course per year.
• Loads, fires, and unloads bisque and glaze kilns.
• Makes clay from slurry to usable pugged clay and monitors the condition of mixed glazes.
• Maintains sculptures and ceramics area equipment and constructs safe and efficient work areas. Cleans, restocks, and organizes the ceramics and sculpture studios. Tracks and reports material supply levels and maintains a well-stocked and well-organized supply and tool rooms.
• Monitors access during open shop hours and ensures that areas are properly secured when closed at night or during semester recesses.

Minimum qualifications based upon job documentation and industry best practices. Any current employees not meeting these qualifications will be grandfathered until they move to a different job.

• Bachelor's degree in related field from an accredited institution.

• Two years' relevant experience.
• Knowledge of ceramic and sculpture techniques and practices, as well as experience with new learners in three-dimensional media.
• Experience firing, loading, repair, and maintenance of a variety of kiln types.
• Experience with equipment commonly used in a ceramics studio.
• Knowledge of glazes, glaze mixing, dry materials, and other supplies commonly used in a ceramics studio.
• Basic proficiency in metal and wood fabrication, including use of MIG or acetylene welding techniques. Ability to safely use and demonstrate operation of tables saws, miter saws, and general woodshop machinery.

Light work with some physical demands such as continuously lifting or moving materials less than 25 pounds, but rarely more than 25 to 50 pounds.

Work is generally performed with exposure to any number of elements which may occasionally require some precautions such as safety glasses, proactive clothing, ear protection, etc.
