General summary

Supports instruction and research in life sciences laboratories.

Major duties

  • Orders, prepares and maintains biological, chemical, electrical and other laboratory- specific supplies for instruction and research.
  • Maintains laboratory equipment in accordance with University as well as federal and state environmental safety and health regulations.
  • Ensures proper cleaning and quality control of laboratory equipment and facilities and the proper disposal of laboratory materials in accordance with University, federal and state regulations.
  • Provides technical training and support concerning laboratory experiments and instruction, materials and equipment and computers. Coordinates the maintenance and repair of teaching instruments, computers and facilities.
  • Develops and implements policies, procedures and standards for laboratory operations.
  • Schedules laboratory use.
  • Hires, trains, evaluates and supervises student employees. Provides work direction to teaching assistants.

Minimum qualifications

Minimum qualifications based upon job documentation and industry best practices. Any current employees not meeting these qualifications will be grandfathered until they move to a different job.

Required education

  • Bachelor's degree in related field from an accredited institution.

Required experience

  • One year’s relevant experience.
  • Laboratory experience.
  • Providing guidance to students or other employees.

Physical requirements

Office or other indoor work with minimal physical demands such as occasionally lifting or moving materials less than 25 pounds. 

Working conditions

Work is generally performed in a well-lit, temperature-controlled indoor environment with occasional exposure to the outdoors or any number of elements.
