General summary
Develops, implements and administers programming for the Soga Japan Center, including campus events, community outreach activities, Japan-related publicity and cultural and linguistic enrichment activities.
Major duties
- Creates and supports programming on Japanese culture and language at local K-12 schools, libraries, museums, companies, sister-city committees and other organizations within Michigan and neighboring areas.
- Creates and maintains a network of relationships between the University, community, businesses, public institutions and Japanese alumni. Serves as a primary contact for communications in the relationship between the University's Soga Japan Center, Graduate College and the Battle Creek Japanese Saturday School.
- Engages in entrepreneurial activities, including grant writing, fundraising and development of revenue generating programs.
- Coordinates lectures and other activities.
- Supports students, faculty, exchange program participants and visitors who come to the University from Japan.
- Answers Japan-related questions and provides Japan-related knowledge in response to queries from the local community, news organizations and government.
Minimum qualifications
Minimum qualifications based upon job documentation and industry best practices. Any current employees not meeting these qualifications will be grandfathered until they move to a different job.
Required education
- Bachelor's degree in related field from an accredited institution.
Required experience
- Two years' relevant experience.
- Strong interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong organizational skills.
Required other
- Advanced Japanese speaking skills.
- Strong understanding of Japanese culture.
- Ability to travel throughout Southwest Michigan.
Physical requirements
Office or other indoor work with minimal physical demands such as occasionally lifting or moving materials less than 25 pounds.
Working conditions
Work is generally performed in a well-lit, temperature-controlled indoor environment with occasional exposure to the outdoors or any number of elements.
