General summary

Provides comprehensive leadership, oversight, planning, coordination and management of the Medieval Institute publishing program.

Major duties

  • Monitors all production matters, timelines and operating budgets, and liaises with international publishing partners about production items. Develops board marketing plans and promotional presence and coordinates with international publishing partners.
  • Coordinates with the printer about price grids and ongoing quality expectations for both digital and offset printing; prepares final files.
  • Completes quality control checks on manuscripts during the production stage, including examining final drafts during the printing process. Completes cataloging-in-publication and copyright applications.
  • Develops and implements the press’s strategic agenda.
  • Develops goals and objectives for the acquisition program, meets regularly with freelance acquisitions staff to discuss goals, conference and output plans.
  • Represents the department on the editorial advisory board shared with the international publishing partner. Coordinates with series editorial boards about press expectations and direction for the series.
  • Oversees yearly conference presence, coordinating with distributions and acquisitions editors.
  • Sets seasonal catalogs and oversees the distribution of that metadata to the appropriate outlets.
  • Represents the press at industry and subject meetings and conferences.
  • Hires, trains and supervises staff. Monitors the project load, assigns new projects and enforces production schedules.

Minimum qualifications

Minimum qualifications based upon job documentation and industry best practices. Any current employees not meeting these qualifications will be grandfathered until they move to a different job.

Required education

  • Master’s degree in a related field from an accredited institution.

Required experience

  • Supervisory or lead experience.
  • Working knowledge of publishing and relevant academic field.
  • Strong interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience with creative software.
  • Experience with office software, including word processing, spreadsheets and presentation software.
  • Strong attention to detail.

Desired qualifications

Desired education

  • Doctoral degree in a related field from an accredited institution.

Desired experience

  • Five years’ experience with a University press.
  • Experience working with in-house and freelance staff.

Physical requirements

Office or other indoor work with minimal physical demands such as occasionally lifting or moving materials less than 25 pounds.

Working conditions

Work is generally performed in a well-lit, temperature-controlled indoor environment with occasional exposure to the outdoors or any number of elements.
