General summary

Advises and counsels University students, exchange visitors, and their dependents on matters related to medical insurance. Maintain compliance in recordkeeping and document retention.

Major duties

  • Ensures that international students have health insurance or financial guarantee which includes health insurance, and that the insurance meets the University’s health insurance requirement. Reviews insurance contract coverage terms to determine scope of coverage.
  • Documents insurance information in student database and manages hold systems.
  • Advises students, exchange visitors and their dependents on United States healthcare. Assists with emergency and non-emergency insurance-related coverage issues. Drafts letters explaining insurance coverage.
  • Consults on optimal utilization of medical insurance benefits and care coordination in international student crisis situations, including medical evacuation to home country.
  • Communicates with carriers and community medical providers. Initiates communication on unpaid claims from medical providers, and appeals denied claims where appropriate.
  • Maintains compliant recordkeeping, records compilation, tabulation and filing, and distribution of claims and communications, including compliance with federal laws and university policies.
  • May provide information on processing policies and procedures to other departments.
  • Provides additional records management support for compliance and records management and imaging based on unit needs.
  • May provide work direction and training to staff and student employees.
  • Other duties as assigned related to unit operational needs.

Minimum qualifications

Minimum qualifications based upon job documentation and industry best practices. Any current employees not meeting these qualifications will be grandfathered until they move to a different job.

Required education

  • Associate's degree or two years' college coursework in a related field from an accredited institution.

Required experience

  • Three years' relevant experience.
  • Experience with medical insurance programs in a medical facility.
  • The ability to interpret policy coverage.
  • Proficiency with word-processing and spreadsheet software.
  • Experience with using and querying databases.

Desired qualifications

Desired education

  • Bachelor's degree in related field from an accredited institution.

Desired experience

  • One year's experience with University systems such as student information systems and document scanning software, project management.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills, including public speaking for insurance orientations and communications with providers or insurance companies.

Physical requirements

Office or other indoor work with minimal physical demands such as occasionally lifting or moving materials less than 25 pounds.

Working conditions

Work is generally performed in a well-lit, temperature-controlled indoor environment with occasional exposure to the outdoors or any number of elements.
