General summary

Develops, implements and manages the recycling, sustainability and waste reduction programs for the University.

Major duties

  • Leads the creation and implementation of new programs and research project collaborations to seek new revenue ventures.
  • Coordinates with relevant campus departments to research and create recycling and waste reduction strategic plans that are consistent with the University’s long-term strategic plans.
  • Provides training and direction to University staff to increase waste diversion practices and reduce contamination issues. Provides guidance and programs for students.
  • Manages multiple budgets related to recycling and waste reduction efforts.
  • Guides and provides research opportunities, logistical assistance and collaborations within academic departments to outside contractors for the management of post-consumer food waste.
  • Researches new and innovative methods to attain a significant increase in waste reduction and recycling.
  • Leads data collection, analysis, public reporting and communications for internal and external campus sustainability reporting.
  • Manages waste reduction and recycling at extracurricular campus activities.
  • Manages employees, student employees and interns to ensure efficient operation of waste reduction, recycling and other sustainability projects.
  • Applies comprehensive knowledge and research to engage teams of students and employees in continuously improving University recycling and waste reduction efforts.

Minimum qualifications

Minimum qualifications based upon job documentation and industry best practices. Any current employees not meeting these qualifications will be grandfathered until they move to a different job.

Required education

  • Bachelor's degree in related field from an accredited institution.

Required experience

  • Three years' relevant experience.

Required other

  • Higher education or equivalent sustainability management experience across multiple disciplines.
  • Strong interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills.

  • Master's degree in related field from an accredited institution.

Physical requirements

Office or other indoor work with minimal physical demands such as occasionally lifting or moving materials less than 25 pounds.

Working conditions

Work is generally performed in a well-lit, temperature-controlled indoor environment with occasional exposure to the outdoors or any number of elements.
