General summary
Supports insurance and billing for health center patients, and administrative and budgetary support for business activities at the center.
Major duties
- Monitors, records, and reports payments to the health center. Uses software systems to manage internal billing to University units. Primary contact to verify student and employee eligibility.
- Serves as a liaison for accounting and financial reporting functions to internal and external partners. Serves as key contact to external billing providers.
- Reviews health center charges and claim information. Takes or recommends corrective actions. Insurance responsibilities include monitoring insurance changes and educating staff on the effects on health center operations.
- Responsible for training and backup for registration and cashier staff. Resolves conflict with patients. Represents the health center at outreach events.
- Consults students seeking assistance with insurance or billing issues. Oversees emergency fund administration.
- Researches, documents, and files appeals as needed.
- Fulfills grant-reporting needs. May write grants for student support.
Minimum qualifications
Minimum qualifications based upon job documentation and industry best practices. Any current employees not meeting these qualifications will be grandfathered until they move to a different job.
Required education
- High school diploma or equivalent.
Required experience
- One year's relevant experience.
- Strong interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills.
- Experience in a medical office or clinical support.
- Experience with electronic health records.
Required other
- Certified Professional Coder.
Physical requirements
Light work with some physical demands such as continuously lifting or moving materials less than 25 pounds, but rarely moving more than 25 to 50 pounds.
Working conditions
Work is generally performed in a well-lit, temperature-controlled indoor environment with occasional exposure to the outdoors or any number of elements.
