General summary

Supports the Department of Physics' research and teaching mission by managing the accelerator laboratory, research, and teaching laboratories. Operates and maintains the particle accelerator. Assists with setting up, calibrating, and repairing scientific equipment. Ensures all laboratories are used safely, efficiently, and effectively.

Major duties

  • Maintains, upgrades, repairs, and rebuilds instrumentation within the accelerator and other laboratories in the department.
  • Designs, upgrades, and builds electronic and digital control systems for the department and the accelerator.
  • Operates the accelerator to support faculty and student research activities. Trains students safe and effective operations of the machine.
  • Conducts safety orientations for students, internal visitors, and external guests.
  • Engages students in hands-on design and instrumentation projects to enhance their educational experience.
  • Participates in outreach activities.
  • Provides guided tours of the laboratory and actively supports recruitment efforts.

Minimum qualifications

Minimum qualifications based upon job documentation and industry best practices. Any current employees not meeting these qualifications will be grandfathered until they move to a different job.

Required education

  • Associate degree in related field from an accredited institution, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Required experience

  • Three years' relevant experience.
  • Experience with electronics development.
  • Experience with analog and digital electronic repair and design.

Physical requirements

Moderate work occasionally working in difficult position or with physical demands such as continuously lifting or moving materials from 25 to 50 pounds and occasionally lifting or moving materials greater than 50 pounds.

Working conditions

Work is performed with exposure to any number of elements which may occasionally require some precautions such as safety glasses, protective clothing, ear protection, etc
