General summary

Creates and sustains university-wide health promotion practices to foster student mental well-being and suicide prevention. Partners with stakeholders across campus to ensure a robust offering of training, prevention, policies, and support services. Contributes to all operations of the department including planning, implementing and assessing mental well-being programs.

Major duties

  • Plans, implements, and evaluates health promotion programs, and services focused on student mental health and resiliency. Designs and facilitates gatekeeper training of faculty, staff, and student leaders. Coordinates sessions for student coping skill development, self-care, and trauma support offered by a variety of departments and student groups.
  • Coordinates the University's efforts to prevent suicide. Ensures the policies, procedures and culture of the University reduce suicide risk for the community. Collaborates with key stakeholders across the University and local community. Reports progress and recommendations for action to department leadership. Represents the University through community task force involvement and professional presentations.
  • Develops and launches peer education programs. Oversees the program priorities, structure, marketing, evaluation, and continuous improvement. Ensures integration of other programs from the department for collective impact. Facilitates training curriculum for the national certification of student peer educators.
  • Monitors academic performance and assigns grades for students seeking academic credit from their work with the department.
  • Incorporates a lens of multicultural diversity, inclusion, equity and social justice. Develops and implements strategies to improve mental health equity. Engages with and serves diverse audiences.
  • Creates and coordinates health literacy strategies that promote mental well-being and access to training and support services. Writes effective messages for multiple media channels.
  • Evaluates mental well-being programs and services. Analyzes data and prepares recommendations to various administrators and key partners. Monitors trends, forecasts resource needs, prepares funding requests, and operates within budget.
  • Assists with department leadership, strategic planning, and implementation of policies and procedures.
  • Hires, trains, evaluates, and supervises staff and student employees.

Minimum qualifications

Minimum qualifications based upon job documentation and industry best practices. Any current employees not meeting these qualifications will be grandfathered until they move to a different job.

Required education

  • Master's degree in related field from an accredited institution.

Required experience

  • Three years' relevant experience.
  • Experience in health promotion, health education, or public health.
  • Supervisory or mentorship experience.
  • Strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills, including public speaking.
  • Evidence of strong commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion.
  • Ability to analyze and address health and well-being needs of emerging adults, especially college students.

Required other

  • Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES), Certification in Public Health (CPH), or willingness to become certified within 36 months of hire.
  • Ability to work irregular shifts and extended hours, including weekends and holidays.

Physical requirements

Office or other indoor work with minimal physical demands such as occasionally lifting or moving materials less than 25 pounds.

Working conditions

Work is generally performed in a well-lit, temperature-controlled indoor environment with occasional exposure to the outdoors or any number of elements.
