General summary
Leads and administers strategic planning and procedures related to University intellectual property, technology transfer, and research commercialization, including intellectual property disclosures, patents, licensing, and company formation. Creates partnerships that link University with state and industry resources to address technology and economic development needs.
Major duties
- Provides leadership in strategic and operational planning and procedures related to intellectual property, technology transfer, and research commercialization and startup formation for the University.
- Advises the vice president for research and innovation on matters related to technology transfer.
- Stimulates invention disclosures from University researchers. Identifies, evaluates, and
- protects researchers' intellectual property.
- Evaluates the market potential of technologies, manages marketing plans and identifies potential licensees.
- Mentors faculty regarding procedures associated with intellectual property disclosure and commercialization. Assures compliance with appropriate law, regulations, and policies.
- Oversees University intellectual property database and contract management systems. Provides data and cost analyses of intellectual property, patents, and copyrights as needed.
- Serves as University liaison with external government and private entities.
- Coordinates the preparation and administration of budgets for all intellectual property activities.
- Hires, trains, evaluates and supervises staff and temporary employees.
Minimum qualifications
Minimum qualifications based upon job documentation and industry best practices. Any current employees not meeting these qualifications will be grandfathered until they move to a different job.
Required education
- Juris Doctorate degree from an accredited institution.
Required experience
- Five years' relevant experience.
- Experience in the research and Innovation environment.
- Direct experience in managing commercialization of intellectual property, with financial training.
- Experience as a patent agent or in the patent system.
Physical requirements
Office or other indoor work with minimal physical demands such as occasionally lifting or moving materials less than 25 pounds.
Working conditions
Work is generally performed in a well-lit, temperature-controlled indoor environment with occasional exposure to the outdoors or any number of elements.
