Geosciences Specialist

Supports research staff during field mapping and drilling, sample collection, sample inventory, laboratory work, geological characterizations, and modeling of geological strata.

• Provides geologic field support, including field mapping, sample collection, descriptions, characterization and data entry to support modeling and mapping of geological strata using geophysical logs, core descriptions, and other data.
• Provides research support with laboratory analysis, physical collections, and inventories.
• Supports databases as directed by senior staff. Inputs field data to support the available databases and inventories, searchable public records, and metadata.
• Assists visiting geologists by preparing geological cores and samples for their examination, providing them with samples for analysis and geophysical well data.
• Prepares materials for and helps conduct outreach programs to industry, government, and the K-12 educational community.
• Writes data summary reports and support proposals and publications.
• Hires, trains, evaluates and supervises student employees.

Minimum qualifications based upon job documentation and industry best practices. Any current employees not meeting these qualifications will be grandfathered until they move to a different job.

• Bachelor's degree in related field from an accredited institution.

• Some relevant experience required.
• Experience in academic or field experience in sample collection, mapping and logging cuttings and gamma logging field support.
• Experience in geological research.
• Experience with geographic information system software.

Light work with some physical demands such as continuously lifting or moving materials less than 25 pounds, but rarely moving more than 25 to 50 pounds.

Work is performed with exposure to any number of elements which may occasionally require some precautions such as safety glasses, protective clothing, ear protection, etc.
