General summary
Responsible for 3D scanning, editing, and managing geological samples and creating realistic digital models for educational and research purposes.
Major duties
- Manages 3D scanning and editing. Creates and edits 3D models for educational and outreach purposes.
- Uses specialized camera equipment for scanning and photography. Uses software for 3D modeling and visualization.
- Transfers photos to software, stitches images together, and enhances realism. Annotates and organizes images in appropriate locations.
- Publishes 3D scanned materials online for accessibility. Scans, identifies, and uploads geological samples to online databases.
- Assists in preserving and managing a large repository of geological cores. Maintains and organizes smaller rock samples for outreach programs.
- Supports K-12 learning initiatives and participates in gem and mineral shows to promote geological education.
- Communicates with international contacts about online geological data.
- Develops Geographic Information System maps, particularly for Michigan geological studies.
- Assists with warehouse responsibilities.
Minimum qualifications
Minimum qualifications based upon job documentation and industry best practices. Any current employees not meeting these qualifications will be grandfathered until they move to a different job.
Required education
- Bachelor's degree in related field from an accredited institution.
Required experience
- Five years' relevant experience.
- Demonstrated experience in 3D manipulation and database management.
Physical requirements
Light work with some physical demands such as continuously lifting or moving materials less than 25 pounds but rarely moving more than 25 to 50 pounds.
Working conditions
Work is generally performed in a well-lit, temperature-controlled indoor environment with occasional exposure to the outdoors or any number of elements.
