General summary
Manages educational initiatives for the Michigan Geological Survey, collaborates on developmental events, and enhances communication strategies to maximize educational impact.
Major duties
- Develops and implements educational programs for diverse audiences, including K-12 students the public, teachers, informal educators, public officials, industry representatives, stakeholders, geoscientists, and other professionals.
- Manages participation of employees in education and outreach activities. Provides training to ensure communication of quality information and adherence to best practices during outreach events. Provides training to staff for safeguarding minors.
- Identifies, promotes, and maintains internal and external partnerships to enhance the impact and effectiveness of outreach programs.
- Establishes metrics to assess the effectiveness of educational programs and outreach activities. Ensures measurable success and continuous improvement of the programs and activities.
- Provides expertise in experiential learning and contributes to the development of hands-on, interactive learning opportunities.
- Assists in proposal preparation and serves as an expert in grant projects related to education and outreach.
- Hires, trains, evaluates, and supervises staff and student employees.

Required education
- Bachelor's degree in related field from an accredited institution.
Required experience
- Three years' relevant experience.
- Experience managing an education and outreach program in earth science, geology, environmental science, or a related field.
- Experience developing hands-on, experiential learning activities in the geosciences.
- Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Demonstrated ability to build and maintain effective working relationships.
- Experience of public speaking to diverse groups with varying levels of understanding of geoscience topics.
- Ability to manage multiple projects, prioritize tasks, and maintain attention to detail.
- Ability to manage multiple budgets.
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a team.
- Ability to promote and foster justice, diversity, equity, and inclusion in all aspects of education and outreach work.
Required other
- Ability to work irregular shifts and extended hours, including evenings and weekends.
- Ability to travel.
Physical requirements
Light work with some physical demands such as continuously lifting or moving materials less than 25 pounds but rarely moving more than 25 to 50 pounds.
Working conditions
Work is generally performed in a well-lit, temperature-controlled indoor environment with occasional exposure to the outdoors or any number of elements.
