General summary

Provides and coordinates comprehensive medical care for assigned athletic teams. Communicates effectively with athletic staff and healthcare providers.

Major duties

  • Conducts pre-participation screenings and reviews medical history with team physicians. Communicates with recruits and families about available care, establishes concussion baselines, and educates on symptom reporting. Coordinates follow-up care, diagnostics, and individualized plans for incoming athletes. Manages bracing, taping, mouth guard fitting, durable medical equipment, and organizes vaccine clinics.
  • Provides on-field evaluation and management of emergent and non-emergent injuries, determining participation based on functional status. Covers practices, games, workouts, and training sessions. Supports moderate to high-risk sports, offers on-call backup for low-risk sports, and coordinates care for officials and visiting teams. Manages medical appointments and assists with academic accommodations for injured student athletes.
  • Prescribes, progresses, and monitors rehab for athletic and non-athletic injuries from post-op to return-to-play. Maintains and recertifies rehab equipment, fabricates custom supports, and coordinates disability services for on- and off-campus needs.
  • Maintains current knowledge of evidence-based practices and National Athletic Trainers Association (NATA) guidelines for catastrophic injuries. Conducts emergency response drills, coordinates CPR/AED training, and updates emergency action plans. Develops care plans for high-risk athletes, prepares and inspects medical equipment, monitors weather risks, and educates staff and athletes per NCAA requirements.
  • Triages, evaluates, diagnoses, and refers athletic and non-athletic injuries and illnesses, and general medical conditions. Maintains broad knowledge of medical specialties to ensure proper referral.
  • Manages medical records and rehabilitation documentation per Michigan Public Health Code, ensuring access for authorized staff and student-athletes. Coordinates communication among healthcare providers and athletic personnel. Supports medical red shirt and disqualification processes.
  • Oversees equipment maintenance, supply inventory, and budget. Updates medical policies annually, manages youth camp coverage, supervises medical assistants, and conducts in-house and NCAA drug testing. Performs administrative tasks as assigned by medical or athletics leadership.
  • Maintains compliance with Michigan Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA) and Board of Certification (BOC) standards, including Continuing Education Units (CEU), and current CPR/AED certification.
  • Supervises facility and student Staff.

Minimum qualifications

Minimum qualifications based upon job documentation and industry best practices. Any current employees not meeting these qualifications will be grandfathered until they move to a different job.

Required education

  • Master's degree in related field from an accredited institution.

Required experience

  • Three years' relevant experience.
  • Strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience with NCAA Collegiate athletic training

Required other

  • Board of Certification- Certified Athletic Trainer.
  • State of Michigan- Licensed Athletic Trainer.
  • American Red Cross- CPR/AED for Professional Rescuer.
  • Ability to work irregular shifts and extended hours, including weekends and holidays.
  • Ability to travel.

Physical requirements

Moderate work occasionally working in difficult position or with physical demands such as continuously lifting or moving materials from 25 to 50 pounds and occasionally lifting or moving materials greater than 50 pounds.

Working conditions

Work is performed in an environment with exposure to somewhat disagreeable or hazardous conditions.
