General summary
Provides advanced immigration advising, compliance oversight, and support for international students and scholars. Serves as a subject matter expert on complex immigration issues, liaises with government agencies, and ensures university-wide compliance. Performs duties as a Designated School Official (DSO) and Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO) in accordance with federal regulations. May mentor or guide other DSOs and AROs.
Major duties
- Provides expert guidance and strategic counsel to international students on complex immigration matters affecting legal status, including academic, employment, travel, and personal considerations. Identifies and resolves compliance challenges through informed decision-making and collaborative problem-solving.
- Oversees and advises on employment authorization compliance for international students, ensuring adherence to federal regulations and university policies. Leads the development and delivery of workshops and training sessions to promote regulatory understanding and student compliance.
- Mentors and supports advisors and staff by providing guidance on immigration policies and best practices to strengthen team performance and service quality. Contributes to the development and improvement of advising protocols, compliance procedures, and training programs to enhance efficiency and regulatory adherence.
- Represents the office at workshops, orientations, and outreach events to promote international student engagement, education, and compliance awareness.
- Serves in a leadership role during leadership absences, providing operational oversight and ensuring compliance with institutional and regulatory requirements.
Minimum qualifications
Minimum qualifications based upon job documentation and industry best practices. Any current employees not meeting these qualifications will be grandfathered until they move to a different job.
Required education
- Bachelor's degree in related field from an accredited institution.
Required experience
- Five years' relevant experience.
- Working knowledge of the Student Exchange Visitor Information System.
- Knowledge of U.S. immigration policies and regulations.
- Strong interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills.
- Demonstrated cross-cultural sensitivity and awareness.
- Experience serving as a Designated School Official or Alternate Responsible Officer.
Required other
- U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident to meet the federal requirements to serve as a Designated School Official (for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security) and Alternate Responsible Officer (for the U.S. Department of State).
Physical requirements
Office or other indoor work with minimal physical demands such as occasionally lifting or moving materials less than 25 pounds.
Working conditions
Work is generally performed in a well-lit, temperature-controlled indoor environment with occasional exposure to the outdoors or any number of elements.
