Manager Power Plant

Oversees the safe, efficient, and economical operation of the University’s power plant and energy resource facilities to ensure a reliable supply of steam and electrical energy. Maintains compliance with environmental and regulatory standards while meeting current energy needs and planning for future requirements.

• Provides administrative guidance and direction for all aspects of plant operations, including monitoring purchasing and service contracts. Maintains staffing levels and ensures compliance with bargaining unit agreements. Responds to requirements from regulatory agencies and ensures adherence to environmental and operational standards.
• Provides direction, supervision, resources, and training to staff to ensure work is performed safely and effectively in accordance with University guidelines and bargaining unit agreements.
• Manages and accounts for overall power plant operations and associated costs. Prepares budgets, forecasts, and operational reports, including information required for billing external entities.
• Ensures compliant operation of the power plant with all permit and emission requirements. Develops and implements programs and procedures to maintain regulatory compliance and submits required reports and data to external agencies as needed.
• Contributes to and supports training initiatives to enhance the apprenticeship program and increase employee skill levels.
• Develops short- and long-range plans to improve plant operations and integrates these plans with overall University needs and strategic priorities.
• Collaborates with facilities teams to develop short- and long-term strategies for energy generation and distribution, including planning for fuel and energy procurement.
• Strives for continuous improvement in plant operations and efficiencies with emphasis on energy conservation, operational effectiveness, and safety.

Minimum qualifications based upon job documentation and industry best practices. Any current employees not meeting these qualifications will be grandfathered until they move to a different job.

• Bachelor's degree in related field from an accredited institution.

• Eight years' relevant experience.
• Experience operating, managing and supervising in a power plant environment including all aspects and equipment and systems such as water treatment, boilers, turbines, etc.
• Demonstrated knowledge of environmental and regulatory requirements.

• NIULPE (National Institute for the Uniform Licensing of Power Engineers) Class 1 or equivalent. Ability to work irregular shifts and extended hours, including weekend and holiday on call duty and respond to Power Plant emergencies - 24 hours/day, 365 days/year. Exposure to other factors associated with an industrial environment producing high pressure steam and high voltage electricity from a high pressure natural gas supply including extreme heat, noise, and other potential hazards.

Office or other indoor work with minimal physical demands such as occasionally lifting or moving materials less than 25 pounds.

Work is performed with exposure to any number of elements which may occasionally require some precautions such as safety glasses, protective clothing, ear protection, etc.
