General summary
Provides leadership, overseeing instructional design services, team operations, and quality standards while maintaining an active instructional design role. Supervises instructional design staff, collaborates on large-scale curricular initiatives, and ensures alignment with institutional priorities and consistent practice.
Major duties
- Oversees and contributes to instructional design services, including course development, instructional consultation, and instructor support across all instructional modalities. Leads complex projects requiring advanced pedagogical expertise and collaboration among multiple stakeholders, and provides guidance on curriculum development, evidence-based teaching practices, Universal Design for Learning, and accessibility standards.
- Coordinates project assignments, workload distribution, and capacity planning to ensure effective service delivery and timely completion of projects.
- Provides leadership for instructional design strategy, services, professional development, resource creation, and team operations. Translates institutional priorities into actionable plans, processes, goals, and expectations for instructional design practice, ensuring alignment across services, resources, workflows, and team initiatives.
- Monitors project outcomes and service effectiveness, using assessment data and stakeholder feedback to drive continuous improvement and inform decision-making. Supports evaluation of instructional development efforts and their impact on teaching and learning outcomes.
- Facilitates collaboration across teaching and learning support functions, coordinating cross-functional initiatives, and promoting integrated, high-quality services.
- Stays current with emerging trends, technologies, accessibility requirements, and best practices; evaluates new approaches for adoption; leads professional development efforts; and supports evolving organizational priorities.
- Hires, trains, evaluates and supervises staff.

Required education
- Master's degree in related field from an accredited institution.
Required experience
- Five years' relevant experience.
- Demonstrated supervisory or lead experience with instructional design staff.
- Advanced knowledge of instructional design theories, models, and best practices.
- Proven project management experience with complex, multi-stakeholder initiatives.
- Experience developing and implementing processes, standards, and quality assurance protocols.
- Demonstrated experience designing online, hybrid, and face-to-face learning experiences.
- Strong knowledge of accessibility best practices and universal design for learning principles.
- Experience working collaboratively with faculty and academic leadership.
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively across multiple teams and functional areas.
- Experience creating instructional design resources, templates, and documentation.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple concurrent projects and priorities.
- Advanced proficiency with learning management systems.
- Proficiency with industry-standard instructional design tools and technologies.
- Experience mentoring and developing professionals.
Physical requirements
Office or other indoor work with minimal physical demands such as occasionally lifting or moving materials less than 25 pounds.
Working conditions
Work is generally performed in a well-lit, temperature-controlled indoor environment with occasional exposure to the outdoors or any number of elements.
